Position Overview:
A growing commercial general contractor is seeking an experienced Traveling Superintendent to oversee ground-up commercial construction projects throughout the Southeast. This person will be responsible for managing day-to-day field operations, subcontractors, safety standards, scheduling, site coordination, project documentation, inspections, and overall jobsite execution.
The ideal candidate has direct commercial GC superintendent experience and has managed large commercial construction projects from start to finish. Strong fit includes experience with ground-up big box retail, light industrial, warehouse, distribution, grocery, or similar commercial projects.
This is different from a smaller retail buildout/remodel-only role. Candidates whose experience is primarily residential, multifamily, subcontractor-only, owner-side, facilities, maintenance, merchandising, small buildouts, or minor renovations may not align unless they also have direct commercial GC superintendent experience on larger ground-up projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage day-to-day onsite construction activities for ground-up commercial projects.
Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, inspections, deliveries, and site logistics.
Maintain project schedules and communicate updates, delays, and field issues to the project manager.
Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, project requirements, and field conditions.
Enforce safety standards, quality requirements, jobsite procedures, and project plans.
Coordinate materials, equipment, manpower, and subcontractor sequencing to keep work moving.
Identify and resolve field issues, trade conflicts, delays, or potential risks.
Track daily logs, field reports, inspections, deliveries, punch list items, and other jobsite documentation.
Lead field communication with project managers, subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.
Assist with project closeout, turnover, final inspections, and punch list completion.
Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and professional job site.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 5+ years of superintendent experience in commercial construction.
Experience working directly for a commercial general contractor is required.
Experience managing ground-up big box retail, light industrial, warehouse, distribution, grocery, or similar commercial projects is strongly preferred.
Experience managing projects generally valued between $5M and $50M is strongly preferred.
Must be able to clearly discuss project types, project values, delivery method, role ownership, and direct field responsibilities.
Ability to manage field operations, subcontractors, schedules, safety, QA/QC, inspections, punch list, and closeout.
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project requirements.
Strong communication, leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Willingness to travel throughout the Southeast as required.
Stable work history with consistent tenure is preferred.
Proficiency with construction management or scheduling tools such as Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project, Fieldwire, or similar tools is a plus.
OSHA 30 certification is preferred.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
