*Core Focus: Strong L2–L7 understanding, routing/firewall/Wi-Fi integration, and Network Access Control (NAC).


Skills - Must Have
  • Layer 2, foundational Layer 3, and introductory Wi-Fi concepts. L2 switching (i.e. fully understand VLANs, tagging, trunking, AAA, Spanning Tree, etc.) and foundational knowledge of L3 networking
Skills - Nice to Have
  • Strong L2–L7 understanding, routing/firewall/Wi-Fi integration, and Network Access Control (NAC). Should have an in-depth understanding of L2 switching and a strong understanding of L3 through 7 networking, routing protocols, firewalls, WiFi and NAC.

Should have an in-depth understanding of L2 switching and a strong understanding of L3 through 7 networking, routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP), firewalls, Wi-Fi, and Network Access Control (NAC – for example ISE and/or CPPM). They should also have a basic understanding of more complex topics like VRFs, BGP, and MPLS.

Technical Skills
  • Layer 2 / Layer 3:
    • Advanced VLAN design and trunking
    • EtherChannel / LACP configuration
    • Advanced STP tuning (portfast, BPDU guard, root guard)
    • Advanced OSPF and EIGRP configuration and troubleshooting
    • Inter-VLAN routing and redundant gateways (HSRP, VRRP, GLBP)
    • Introductory VRF and route leaking concepts
  • Layer 4–7:
    • Firewall concepts (stateful inspection, NAT, ACLs)
    • Application layer troubleshooting (DNS, DHCP, HTTP, HTTPS)
    • QoS basics (classification, marking, queuing)
  • Wi-Fi (Intermediate Level):
    • Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) configuration and management
    • Understanding of RF design (channel planning, power levels, interference)
    • Authentication and security (WPA2/3, 802.1X, RADIUS)
    • Basic wireless site survey concepts
    • Troubleshooting roaming, coverage, and throughput issues
  • Network Access Control (NAC):
    • Familiarity with Cisco ISE, Aruba ClearPass, or similar
    • Device profiling and posture assessment basics
    • Role-based access policies and VLAN assignment
  • Emerging / Advanced Topics:
    • Intro to BGP and MPLS
    • VRFs and multi-tenant segmentation
    • SD-Access / SD-WAN fundamentals
  • Tools & Soft Skills:
    • Network performance monitoring and log analysis
    • Change control and documentation ownership
    • Mentoring junior engineers and assisting with design reviews
